The Motherland is a nation located beyond the Isle of Blackreef . It appears to be (or has been) a major superpower in international geopolitics. In an interview in October 2022 Deathloop's director, Dinga Bakaba, confirmed that The Motherland is the nation of Tyvia from the Dishonored series.
Background
Prior to the 20th Century, The Motherland was once the nation of Tyvia, a constituent state of the Empire of the Isles, then the foremost constitutional monarchy of the known world. However, following the destabilizing events of the 1850s and the subsequent decline of the Empire, Tyvia seceded from the Empire and waged war on the other Isles.
During the Operation Horizon expedition, headed by Field Marshal J. Berezin, the Motherland surveyed and charted the Isle of Blackreef through the Aerial Survey Service, a division of the Army of the Motherland. The map was specifically created to near-precisely scale the regions and proportions of Blackreef accurately, per the Imperial Institute of Cartography and the Exploration Edict of 1912. [1]
Due to an anomaly located on the Isle, the Motherland sent out Operation Horizon to build a military base there in 1931. By 1961, after their old military base on Blackreef was purchased by the AEON Program , three Motherland inhabitants journeyed to Blackreef to spy and monitor AEON, [2] documenting various AEON operations from 1961 until First Day in 1963, [3] [4] although the third was poisoned after the other two spies decided never to leave the Loop. Notes
- Many details were initially unclear regarding the internal politics and geography of the "Motherland" - including the name "Motherland" - which was recently confirmed to be the nation of Tyvia in an external interview. This would likely place its capital as the city of Dabokva, located to the South of Tyvia.
- Upon release, textures ingame showcased a sign on various door locks on Blackreef mentioning the High Judges, who in the Dishonored series, are named as a quasi-military tribunal lording over the Isle of Tyvia. While the textures were replaced with an update to the game, this may imply that the High Judges have remained as the ruling faction of Tyvia--and The Motherland--well into the 1960s.
Behind the Scenes
- It is implied that the Motherland may have been involved in a world-spanning conflict, judging by the wreckage of aircraft located across the island. This is partly confirmed by Bethesda/Arkane, as Tyvia/The Motherland seceded from the Empire, and waged various wars on the other Isles.
- The Motherland has been confirmed to be the nation of Tyvia from the Dishonored series. As for the rest of the Empire, it is implied that by the early 1960s, a major socio-economic crisis that could potentially lead to the collapse of human civilization has engulfed the rest of the Isles.
